  1. How do I get Java on my Treo 600 or 650?

    See http://www.palmone.com/us/support/jvm/.

This will take you to this page, where you can buy the IBM Java add-on WEME for $5.99 for the Treo 600 or free for the Treo 650.

  2. How do I install BuddyBuzz after I have the IBM Java support installed?

The page http://www.palmone.com/us/support/jvm/enduserdoc.html describes three ways to install Java "midlets" (a.k.a. mobile applets): by Hotsync PRC file, by Treo Internet browser, and by Direct Jad URL. We don't have a Palm .prc file for download yet, so skip over that. The browser download works for WME 5.6 (J9 2.1), but doesn't work in WEME 5.7.1 (J9 2.2). Unfortunately, we have no information as to when download by browser will be fixed. If you have the older WME on your Treo 600, we recommend that you do not upgrade to WEME 5.7.1.

That leaves direct Jad URL method which is accomplished by:

    A. Start the IBM Java VM (or "Midlet HQ" in the previous version) app on the Treo, pick Install.

    B. Enter the URL http://get.buddybuzz.net/BuddyBuzz.jad

    C. Click Okay on all of the approval dialogs.

  3. Try an alternate installation method

An alternative way to install is to Download BuddyBuzz as a Palm application. Save it to your desktop, and then double-click the file named "BuddyBuzz" or "BuddyBuzz.prc". When you see the Install Tool window pop up, click Done. BuddyBuzz will be installed on your Treo 600/650 during your next hotsync.

Other PalmOS devices that support MIDP 1.0 (also called J2ME) can install the BuddyBuzz Palm application. PalmOS devices that support Java without MIDP are missing some required resources and BuddyBuzz will not start up at all (it is harmless to try it.)

  4. Why doesn't my passcode work?

The 4 digit passcode is numeric and you must be careful to enter numbers since only * is displayed.

In some data entry forms, the Treo will automatically switch to numeric input, but in this case you need to lock the number shift key by hitting it twice, and then enter your 4 digit passcode.

  5. What is the deal with the multiple names like IBM WME, WEME or J9?

IBM supplies the Java VM for the Treo 600/650 in a product called Websphere Micro Environment (WME). It was renamed to be Websphere Everyplace Micro Environtment (WEME) when 5.7.1 came out in Feb. 2005.

Note that WEME version 5.7.2 is for the Windows Mobile platform only.

One clue about the version number is that the PalmOS application is called "Midlet HQ" in WME 5.6 and "IBM Java VM" in WEME 5.7.1

Another way to determine the version number is by the PalmOS application version display (from the PalmOS All view, pick Menu, App, Info, Version). Underneath the WEME packaging, the Java VM is called J9 and appears as several J9 components. As of May, 2005, the WEME version 5.7.1 contains J9 ver. 2.2.x; the previous version from July-August 2004 was WME 5.6 (but was not labeled 5.6) has J9 ver. 2.1.x.
